I knew what you meant in that thread. Husband's father was like your dad, in never fixing anything properly and in not doing any preventative maintenance. He was always breaking down at the worst possible times (like during bean harvest with a 3 day rain predicted to move into the area)... and ALWAYS angry as all-get-out at the blankity-blank MACHINES. One of my husband's brothers is just like their dad, and those two guys are always majorly "stressed" about farming. Because my husband found that methodology so frustrating when growing up, he has always been the exact opposite...inspected and replaced belts, bearings, etc., on a regular basis instead of waiting for one to break during harvest.
My husband always spent the off-season preparing for the coming-season too. For instance after spring planting, he would do maintenance on the combine, grain wagons, elevator and plow...or during late winter make sure the planter tractor, planter and digger got their annual maintenance so when the weather was right in spring, he was ready to roll. Though we had plenty of years when money was tight, a little preventative maintenance goes a long way. Just makes life a whole lot more pleasant.
