I think it's a superb idea. Wish all oil sumps were required to have them. The neat thing is that they can fill up with particles and the new additions continue the magnetism so you can really build up a lot of crud on one and it still work.
Back when I drained and refilled my auto trannys I always put a button magnet in the pan.
