Went to supplier yesterday for seed potatoes (Russet Burbank). A couple of days before we went down, we called to confirm they had them in stock, they did. We went down and she said they only had a few left in the bin. We had around 30 lb of seed left from last years crop, so between what we had and their seed, we will be able to make up at least 4 ton of potatoes, if it grows like it did last year. We gave a ton, at least away last year.
A few days ago I read where the potato growers assoc. is acting like OPEC, trying to force the smaller growers out and artificially increase prices for the bigger growers, glad we grow our own. Well today we got them cut and are air drying, at least 60 lb of burbanks, and 7 lbs of Red Pontiac for Old Blue(german shepherd) he likes his fresh red potatoes.He is our resident picker and toter in the fall,when potatoes are dug.
Last year we got them in the first week of May, going to see if the weather will cooperate and get them in again this year. Already run the tractor thru garden,spread the composted manure across the garden, and dug it up with the cultivator, and only thing left is to till it with the troy built,and plant what seed we have. Still waiting on some seed from Gurneys and green plants we buy form local greenhouse. Hope we don"t get hit with snow,like Guido did.
It"s always a chore to keep from rushing the spring garden, sick of the cold snowy winter time,plus fresh veggies taste best. Anyway the potatoes still have eyes, that"s why the eyes have it.lol.
