You can transport the gun, but once in a state where your permit is no good, you basically can't touch the gun or you become an instant felon.
You've got to have a (non-resident) concealed carry permit for every state you plan on traveling in with your handgun, or one that the particular state recognizes. Some states do not recognize any other states' CCP.
