If it was a "tournament " I would think that the team probably did need him and he was commited to be there. From reading the rest of your post you really don't sound that fun to hang out with anyhow.Instead of trying to make him feel "very uncomfortable" maybe you could go watch the game and stop calling the school about stupid stuff.
