The problem with any sort of oil on farm equipment chains is it attracts dirt, and dirt is the enemy of chains and sprockets. My dad thought chains are better off not lubed at all, an opinion I don't share. But there are reasons that dry lubes have become very popular with motorcyclists; not only do they not attract dirt, but they don't leave such a mess on the bike. But if you insist on using an oil-based lube, it doesn't matter much what you use: Whether it's high-end chain lube in a spray can or waste motor oil, in a dusty environment it's going to quickly turn into a mixture of oil and dirt that will grind sprockets to an early death and make a general mess.
