I've had Lymes for 28 years, and I know a lot of people who have similar chronic Lyme conditions. I have had 2 runs on the IV antibiotics, back in 86 and 88. They helped straighten out the brain and spinal cord infection, but I did not get cured. Unfortunately this disease is very political and most doctors are very limited in what treatments they can prescribe. It seems the treatments are limited by $$$$ (insurance company and big pharma money). Some people from our support group have gone to Mayo, and have not been treated well at all. Many of the tests are highly flawed as they are based on the human body developing antibodies to the spirochete bacteria. Some of us will never have a positive response to those tests, because we don't make the antibodies. There is a lot of science to the "why" of the non antibody response, but for this discussion, just say there are many people who do not make such antibodies.
The usual first antibiotic of choice is doxycyclene in oral pills. My SIS was given a prescription a few years ago of 1 such pill and told that it was all that was needed. What a load of BS!! A 2 week prescription of Doxy is common, but when my wife had the bite and bull's eye rash, I insisted on doubling the normal Rx and going for 30 days. This is about 6 years later and she is beginning to show some of the symptoms in joints, fatigue, and memory loss.
There is a blood test that tests for the shreds of spirochetal DNA in the blood. It is called the PCR (polymerase chain reaction) test. It can be done by a lab in California, IGENIX. No antibodies are needed for this test.
I hope your wife has a better time getting rid of this miserable disease than I have had. Some people's immune systems seem to be better at dealing with this bacteria than other folks'. Best wishes for her speedy recovery!
