IF you are not going to remove the carburetor then drain it. Then put in good fresh gas. I use Sea Foam in the new gas. Just use it at a higher rate than the can says to use. Run the engine/motor,even if it is running crappy, long enough to pull some fresh gas into the carburetor. Shut it off. Let it set 24 hours and the Sea Foam and fresh gas will sometimes cut the old junk out of the carburetor.
I have only had this work on ones that are lightly gummed up. The new gas will turn to varnish in a matter of weeks/months. When that happens nothing short of a complete tear down and cleaning will usually work.
