Depending on just what parts were used to (re)build the starter it may be as simple as rotating the commutator end frame 90°.
The last CE frame I bought came with instructions on how to change it from CW rotation to CCW rotation. An M starter needs to CCW rotation. After studying it for a while I determined that if I followed the directions I would end up with a starter that spun the wrong direction. I assembled it just as it came and the starter worked just like I wanted it to.
