I doubt it's possible to successfully charge a modern battery "backwards." Leaves the factory dry-charged and if it was ever stone-dead, it probably got ruined.
What is the problem? If it's been this way for year - are you saying it was not charging for a year?
The generator doesn't care if run negative ground or positive ground. You can polarize it either way. It's the regulators that sometimes will only work one way. Some are convertible and some are not.
To polarize for positive ground - just tap the "A" terminal on the generator for a split-second with negative current.
If you ever want to stick in a modern alternator - a Hitachi from an old Subaru is an almost "bolt-in" replacement with almost no mods. Fits much better and easier then any Delco. I've got two B275s, one B414, and one 3414 and all have the little Hitachi alternators.
