Not germane to this federal discussion Gordo, but many places do have great disparity in taxing farmers for schools.
Officially, I'm a tree farmer. Our local schools depend largely on our property taxes. My farm land is taxed a small fraction as the same assessment of non-farm real estate. In my county, something like $90m per year is not collected on farm land due to this program. Not small change.
Whether or not this is correct is an argument that comes up regularly, and should. Has nothing to do with farm kids attending schools any more than non-farm taxpayers having kids in school. The program was designed, and works, to keep farmers from being taxed off their land by rising assessments due to urban creep.
I am no exception. A previous county government started an effort to greatly reduce farm taxation, eying that $90m/yr. I was about to put up the For Sale sign when I discovered a state law that, after I jumped through the hoops, prohibits my county from denying me farm taxation.
