In about 1955 or so, I was at my grandparent's house in Centralia, and we heard the steam whistle blowing as the train went through town. Grandpa told me to remember the sound, because the diesel locomotives were replacing the steam engines. I was 7 or so at the time, and never forgot that conversation.
Of course, I needn't have worried about not hearing the steam whistles again- for 25 years, the road to Chehalis from our place goes right by the headquarters and depot for the Chehalis Steam Train, which runs about 5 times a day on weekends, all summer. Much blowing of the whistle. I tend to stop even if train is a ways away, because the kids are always happy when someone waves at them.
Harold Borovec, age 85 and not slowing down, is the engineer and pretty much runs the place. He gets volunteers from the county jail to do track work, and he never lacks for volunteers. Its hard work, and I asked him one time how does it. "Easy- I put a pack of Camels, a pack of Winstons, and a pack of Salems on the dashboard of the rig, and tell 'em to help themselves. I've got pop for the breaks, wife packs pretty good lunches, and I don't get on 'em about their language. For a few hours, its kind of like they're not in jail."
