Time to get the multi meter out. Measure ohms of primary circuit of coil. If about 1.5 to 2 ohms it is a 6 volt coil and requires a resistor in series with very near same resistance as coil . If it measures about 3.5 to 4 ohms it is a true 12 volt coil, no resistor required. You can also measure amperage draw with points closed , switch on , engine not running and it should not exceed 4 amps. If the battery is negative ground you hook neg side of coil to distributor. Far as alternator, number 2 terminal goes to battery, either at heavy wire on alt or better yet, directly battery. Number one is exciter, needs voltage from switch to excite alt upon start up and requires a diode or resistor to allow engine to shut off when switch is turned off.
