Personally, I would give back anything that was above my out of pocket cost. You have to think that the machine has some value either as parts or scrap. When I have done that the customer normally says that it isn't fair for me and gives me some extra. I would fix it sell it and then reimburse the parts and some to the owner (especially if a good customer) as the good will is priceless.
