Down here it's short also. Not only that, you can stand at the end of a field and it looks like you are looking at the picture of 1 plant reflected in a thousand mirrors. All are exactly the same height, same 2 ears in the same place on the stalk and all. You hear a lot of the usual news hype about genetically modified seed but I think it is a great idea.....just like back in the days of the dust bowl a guy came up with a seed that could survive the drought....saw a movie on it once. Developer had a hard time selling them (initially) as they were different, cost a lot, and farmers were skeptical about growing with minimal water. Seems he sold them for a part of the crop to get the ball rolling.
However, since having a slight interest in the subject, I find that the guys bailing silage grow a different variety here that gets 8' or thereabouts. Obviously if you are in for sileage you want one thing and if you want the kernels you want them, not a lot of residue to process.
