There are many places that cause a small internal hydraulic leak that will never bother anything except hot-starting. It only takes a tiny flow to cause the pump to go into "pump" stroke and cause hard cranking. If it IS the pump, it's likely just the stroke-control valve that you can change without removing the pump. If the problem is a leak on the tractor, my first suspect would be the steering. There are 6 o-rings in there that were leak-prone in early machines. Part # L34451 as I recall.
Stroke-control valve part # depends if you have the tiny 1.3 German pump, 2.4 USA pump, or 2.4 metric pump. All three were used on 2440s.
