Obed Hussey did, indeed, patent a reaper prior to McCormick. Obed's patent was granted in 1833. McCormick's in June of 1834. They were in fierce competition and after both made several patented innovations to their respective reapers, Hussey was driven out of business and virtually forgotten. Daniel Massey, on the other hand, didn't even open a shop to build farm equipment until 1847 and a very simple shop it was. He jumped in with his own designs for reapers somewhat later.
