Battle Lake MN has no logic. Haven't had any for over 40 years. Ford (new car/truck and Farm equipment Ford and NH) gone, elevator closed. Lost a Ford dealer, elevator, clothing store, one grocery store, boat dealer, several gas stations, couple of bars, 1 bait and tackle shop and one hardware store sense 1972. The only businesses they want are art/antique/boutique/eatery type places. They have openly stated that other types of businesses may bring in migrant and other undesirables. Heck in 72 they were making it plain that they would prefer farmers do business elsewhere during tourist season. Our neighbors (farmers) let us know that within 2 weeks of us moving onto the farm.
With the bedroom community idea comes the fact that any decent enough paying jobs around here are a 20 plus mile one way drive from Battle Lake. That means only those in better paying jobs can afford to live that far away and to commute 5 days a week at current gas prices. What a few snobs in town call "a better class of people".
