Goes to show what I know! I thought MI had cooperheads! When we were kids we used to feed pigs ear corn. We had corn crib on stilts and a hooper system with a chute on the bottom to fill the basket(or wagon, truck, etc.)Even with that setup once in awhile a snake would come sliding down the chute. More bulls than rattlers(No copperheads in NM either)but still exciting. We used an old fruit basket to carry corn to the hogs. If you filled it the night before you better be darn careful when you picked it up the next day. Your setup reminded me of those days.
