To add to your comments about the Mini 14, I have an older Ranch Rifle that is lucky to hit the side of the barn from inside the barn! I discovered that the early ones had one in 7 inch twist barrels that were designed to shoot military ammo at the time, that had 69 grain bullets, or thereabouts.
When I shot the 55 grain stuff, they went wild.
I have since purchased some 69 grain ammo to try in it, but haven't been back out to shoot it yet.
Some of the inaccuracy may be due to the light skinny barrels on them because after many years of complaints, Ruger has put heavier barrels on the newer ones, and changed the twist rate to something milder.. For anyone considering a Mini, I would recommend only one of the newer versions of the Ranch Rifle.
For anyone wanting to learn about ways to improve the older ones I recommend "perfectunion.com" (without the quotes). Their forum has a section exclusively about the Mini 14 and solutions to accuracy problems, etc.
