: My VAC has only 10-12 lbs. oil pressure warm and
: 8-10 lbs. cold. Before I restore it should I
: replace the bearings? It does not have a noticeable
: knock. Also, how do you use a category 1 finish
: mower on an eagel hitch?

If you have more oil pressure hot than cold, which you have indicated, the pickup screen to the pump may just be plugged. Pull the pan and take a look. If you have less oil pressure when hot, the the problem is more likely to be the pump and bearings.
If so, pull the pump apart and inspect the impellers for wear. A bad pump is easy to detect, the imps will be all chewed up. You also want to check out the pressure relief piston and make sure it is seated, and doesn't have something like a piece of gasket stuck in it keeping it partially open.
Last but not least, pull the # 4 rod, and the center main bearing cap, and check them out. These two usually wear the worst. If there is any copper showing, or deep gruves turned in them, you've found the problem.
Normal oil pressure on the old Continental and Case small 4 cyls is 16 - 20 psi, so a little excess clearance goes a long way. Wish the previous owner of my Case 310 had been a little more concerned about low oil pressure. I fixed the oil pump and bearings, and now get a fine mist of oil out the exhaust due to badly worn exhaust valve guides.
Once fixed, use a good grade of oil rated for industrial use. I used Union 76 Guardall 15-40 and it is holding up just fine. Chevron Delo and Shell Rotella are also good.

Good Luck

Today's Featured Article - An Old-Time Tractor Demonstration - by Kim Pratt. Sam was born in rural Kansas in 1926. His dad was a hard-working farmer and the children worked hard everyday to help ends meet. In the rural area he grew up in, the highlight of the week was Saturday when many people took a break from their work to go to town. It was on one such Saturday in the early 1940's when Sam was 16 years old that he ended up in Dennison, Kansas to watch a demonstration of a new tractor being put on by a local dealer. It was an Allis-Chalmers tractor dealership, ... [Read Article]
