mom always made a fruit cake at Christmas and we had a neighbor that always did what mom would do. mom made hers from good ingredients while the neighbor would improvise and then always wonder why hers was not as good as moms. one year in the early 60's neighbor ask mom if her fruitcake was spicey hot. mom said no so they compared recipes. recipe called for 1/2 cup butter; seem s neighbor did not have butter so she used sausage dripping instead. still a good laugh after all of these years. by the way; first Christmas without mom. enjoy yours.
