I retired from UPS in '04 after 25 years as a 'feeder (tractor-trailer) driver' and I know that the lower & mid-level managers are prone to putting some crazy schemes into motion without any real thought. When UPS's founder, James Casey, was still alive he sometimes attended the board meetings when things were going off-track and set things right. His philosophy was: 'We sell service', period!' Since he retained over 50% of the stock he was still in the driver's seat and the company would, very quickly, return to that way of operation. At one point, in the '80s or '90s, the 'whizz-kids' came up with what was called 'RDI' or Rural Delivery Initiative. The idea was that the local 'center' manager would review the incoming parcels and hold those that went to an area that required it to be delivered as a 'single' or 'runner' which required a driver to drive a long distance for a single delivery. The junior executives making the decision to hold this package at the center until more were to be delivered to that same area were mostly completely without ANY on-road delivery experience and so, drivers could not provide the service that their long-time customers were used to and deserved. The drivers began to refer to RDI as Real Dumb Idea and it was abandoned after a too-long run. If Mr. Casey had still been involved RDI would have been aborted before birth. I get quite a bit of stuff off of the internet and am pleased with the service that I get from USPS, FedEx and UPS. However, I have noticed that tracked items have begun to exhibit the 'languishing for days at a time' that was prevalent during the RDI days. It seems as though the newest crop of 'managers' at Big Brown never heard of the RDI boondoggle and now consider the 'We sell service' credo of James Casey as 'old school' and have reverted to the 'It's all about the money' school of thought. :evil: A pity, BUT, just maybe, they will snap out of it before they ruin the company ....... one can always hope! :roll:
