Likely a virus, if you don"t have troubles like that often.
I have had sinus problems for many years. Sinus surgery helped a whole bunch. I also have allergies and use Allegra every day.
One thing not mentioned that also helps: rinsing out the nasal/sinus area with warm salt water. Most drug stores carry the Neilmed kit, which has a plastic squeeze bottle and little packets of the right amount of salt to put in a bottle of warm water. Rinsing will often wash out lots of crud and make me feel better and sleep better.
If you have an infection that lasts more than a week or so, and/or have a temperature above about 101, it might be a good idea to go to the doctor, as you probably have a secondary infection that might be treatable with antibiotics. If you have sinus problems often, it is probably worth it to go to an Ear/nose/throat doctor to see if there is anything they can do to help your problems.
I suffered for many years with frontal sinuses that just could not drain and were infected all the time. Surgery really helped and I have been much healthier. I wish I had got the surgery 10 years sooner. Good luck!
