seems to depend on the bale... some bales they clean up completely, nothing left at all, other bales they leave maybe 15%... seems to be mainly stemmy alfalfa, it's like they can pick the leaves off and leave the stem, clever things! Before it got really cold (mid Dec) we were feeding enough for two days at a time, didn't seem to be too much waste. We are feeding on pasture so the cows tramp the "waste" in and by mid summer it has all gone... doesn't need any fertilizer on the pastures, but we do have to add P to the hay ground and a bit of S too.
