As a kid, I made the same observation; it just seemed that Studebakers (car or truck) smoked more than the rest. My Dad had a 3/4 ton Studebaker which he turned into a flatbed for hauling hay. Ran really good and I think it had the "hill hold" feature. The only thing I have left is the rearend which he narrowed to 48" to use in building a small tractor. He never got a round tuit and neither have I.
