I'd like to know where these starter drives are coming from? I got one just before Christmas for my Oliver 1600 gas that has the opposite problem. About 50% of the time it won't kick in. The starter just whirls. I took it back apart, sprayed it with brake clean since it had what seemed to be kind of like cosmolene or something on it,but when I turn it back in all the way to what you'd call the "rest" position, there's a catch like it wasn't machined right. I've got it working ,maybe 75% of the time, but when it won't,I have to hit the starter HARD with a hammer.
Lee Little was saying the other day that he had one on a 3020 Deere that didn't even act like a problem with the drive. The whole starter was dragging and wouldn't start the tractor. Said the rebuilder checked it all out and said it was OK,but a new drive took care of that problem.
Just from those two things,I'd say it's some cheap junk starter drive causing your problems.
