too much valve lash causes that. have saw that happen many, many times on engines in chev"s and fords also. and tractor engines. the valve stem end may not have been hardened properly could be a culprit also.as in old fords with none adjustable valve lash some times the valve stem had to be ground to spec. had to be careful not to remove too much meat. just think, same thing as using a cold chisel and ball peen hammer... the chisel end gets mushroomed.
