Until I got into the HVAC trade 15 years ago, our farm house was heated with a gravity coal furnace, burning local soft coal. Grandpap was pretty good with it, but Dad was not. It seemed like it was always either 50 degrees or 85 degrees inside.
Now, we have a gas furnace burning our free gas, but I still have a stove that burns wood or soft coal, both from on the farm. I don't really have enough draft for the coal, and I sometimes get smoke in the house. I am only burning gas until I get a taller chimney built.
The local Amish burn some Pea sized anthracite in their homes. My father in law, closer to the hard coal region, burns rice in a Keystoker stove. Coal is far from dead in PA.
