I never heard of black ice until my second tour of Germany. It was used to describe a situation of ice that caused the roads to look wet rather than icy and because it was on black top the road was black. Can be a very dangerous condition because normally it's patchy causing drivers that are unaware to hit it at much faster speeds. Glare ice covered everything. Now it seems that any ice on the roads that from a distanced makes the roads look like they are just wet is now black ice.
