The wiring on the old tractors was very basic and simple, so don't be afraid of it.
If you want to keep it 12v, one thing you need to look for is did everything get changed over from 6v to 12v like the coil and lights.
Also it may have been positive ground. The alternator will require a negative ground system and the ignition coil will need to have the + terminal wired to the ign switch, and the - terminal to the distributor lead.
The alternator wiring will depend on which alternator was installed. Most common is a Delco 10SI. Here's a diagram:

A trip to a good auto supply with wiring supplies will be helpful. The split plastic harness wraps make for a neater job. Soldering and shrink tubing provide a more trouble free result.
Might take a look at the alternator mount, see how well everything lined up, the pulley is right for the belt size, everything is tight, etc.
