Sounds like the pins at the base of your shift stick have worn out. Take the clamp loose at the base of the stick that holds the rubber boot to the shift plate. Pull the boot up. Looking down, there should be two notches in the round part at the base of the stick. On the outside of the raised part of the shift plate that the stick is in, you will see what looks like a round dowel that goes into the notches. Pull/pry the pins out. Sometimes you can turn them end for end and they"ll work fine. Otherwise, you can get a piece of steel dowel the same diameter. You will have to taper them with emerey cloth or something to resemble the originals. Reinstall them, pull the shift boot down and reinstall the clamp. The clamp actually keeps them in place. You may have to pull the shift plate up to realign the shift rails. Fairly easy fix.
