Walter Brennen, one of my most favorite actors. 'No brag, just fact', was from 'The Guns of Will Sonnet'. I wish they would do re-runs.
When I was in the Naval reserve, we were required, annually, to serve active duty aboard ship for 2 weeks. My last cruise (1961) was aboard the Destroyer USS Maddox. (later Gulf of Tonkin incident) The skipper of the ship was Walter Brennen's son in law, an avid sportsman.
On the first day out at sea, on a balmy sunny afternoon, I started hearing these loud popping sounds coming from the bridge. So I had to ask someone what all the noise was about, and was told that it was the skipper shooting at flying fish from the bridge with his M-1 rifle.
I don't remember his name, but he was your typical Naval career officer, all Navy, and super squared away. We enjoy our freedom today because of guys like that. One of many.
Best regards
Patrick
