You would inevitably have to end it at some point, according to the scenario you have described. Better that it be a time of your choosing rather than an emergency health-related dispersal. Don't look at it as a betrayal of a family legacy, consider it the finish line of a long good run.
I can understand a sense of loss at not having to milk cows twice a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. Gee, what to do with all of that spare time?
