The Hercules engine has a standard SAE mount on the rear of the engine so there are several other makes of engines that will bolt up to the rear clutch-housing. Late HGs and OC3s are bascially identical crawlers and Oliver made a few OC3s with four-cylinder Continental diesel engines. Swapping engines would still take a lot of fooling with the hydraulic pump drive, engine mounts, radiator, etc. I've seen HGs with Chevy Chevette engines, Wisconsin engines, Continental engines, etc. My choice would be keep the Hercules. Dating HGs is usually difficult because they were like the Model T Fords of the small crawler world. Parts got swapped a lot. Early HGs have front idler wheels that have a raised rib in the middle. Later HGs and OC3s have the better front idler with a recess in the middle and raised walls on the sides. Also very late HGs have slightly different final drives. An engine put of a Case 310 would be a 148 gas or a 188 diesel I assume.
