My grandmother used diesel in a sprinkling can to edge every building. No one owned a trimmer back then. You trimmed from the fuel barrel.
The best was when my grandmother wanted a croquet court. We measured and burried telephone poles for the edging. We perfectly leveled it and then she started pouring. She had enough diesel on it that the top was almost like blacktop. Those croquet matches were like an all out war. Many battles won and lost out there.
I still use a little diesel in tough to kill spots. It doesn't sterilize the ground as long as you would think. I pour used oil down around the cement foundation of the house once a year (just drizzle at grass level) and have never had a termite issue. An old timer told me they always used kerosene. That isn't cheap anymore!
