The algae has been around far longer than the biodiesel. Yes, the fact the biodiesel tends to attract water doesn't help matters, but the biodiesel itself has nothing to do with the algae. The algae gets into the fuel system in water and actually lives in the water and 'eats' the hydrocarbons in the fuel.
Further, the algae problem isn't just in fuel systems anymore either. I ran into a hydraulic system the other week that had algae growing in it due to the tank getting contaminated with water and then let sit for too long without the system being used and getting hot enough to kill the algae off. When calling around to find something to kill it, I discovered that the same biocide used in the fuel systems can also be used in a hydraulic system. In fact the guy told me that he had received quite a few calls in the past year or so from others with the same problem with their hydraulic systems.
