We ran both Massey combines and Allis tractors, as a kid. Neighbor had a 706. The German version, and Dad was forever trying to get the Allis to burn as clean as the 706. One day we helped them work a pivot, getting ready to plant alfalfa. The Allis burned 3 gallon per hour. 706, 4 gallon per hour, and he was just pulling a spike tooth harrow. Never heard about the smoke after that.
