There can be a HUGE difference in perceived value of a machine of any sort that is original, and can be taken to a show and be presentable without repainting. We have all seen examples of this, but it can take awhile to find the buyer. If you are in a position to be able to make an investment, since they want to move it, you could offer them more like the $1700 then advertise it in the MF magazine (assuming that there is one) for $3500. If it is as nice as you say I bet that it will bring $3400, without putting a dime into it.
