Using lots of salt and its counterpart sugar is the cheapest way to alter the taste of food. I define taste as a simple sensation that occurs on the tongue contrasted to flavor which is a complex sensation developed on the tongue and in the sinuses. Developing a good flavor takes time and extra ingredients The great use of fast-food, convenience food, processed food etc. has dumbed-down people's appreciation of what food should taste like.
