Lot of guys came back from WWII in Europe saying that it was against the rules of land warfare to fire a .50 machine gun at troops. Only aircraft and trucks and such. That rumor stayed around the US Army until the Army adopted the .50 sniper rifle. What happened was Patton in his drive across France ran short of .50. Now we had quad mount .50s in AA mounts. The Germans were still doing some ground attacks against rear area targets. Patton had his commanders orders troops not to shoot their .50's at troops stating that it was illegal.
So that may have been something that some joker started just by messing with a new guy that never questioned it. Maybe was a bit too busy fighting a war to think about it.
