Not hard at all. THe others have outlined how to get it out. Be sure to back off the adjustments as much as you can before trying to pull it out. You'll find a comealong works real well for getting it out simply because the slides are going to be in real rusty/dirty/rough country and the plunger isn't going to just fall out of the back. Order ONE slide from NH. Get some hard maple/oak/ash/beech and make 3 or 4 more on your own. When I did mine some years back the slides were over $50.00 a piece IIRC. Get all the adjusters loosened up and neversiezed. do any work in the bale chamber you need to now. Get the knife good and sharp at the right angle and try to sharpen the ledger plate to a right angle too. Helps to get lots of drain oil on the slides before you put the plunger back in. Grease or oil up the area the slide runs in. Put the plunger back in and set to factory specs. It'll be like a new machine.
