Having just replaced a 20 hp single with a BS twin 20 I can assure you the single is a bad design. One problem is getting 20 hp in one bang every other rotation. Vibration is horrific to the point where a lot of bolts to key areas just can't stay in place.
Next they decided to invert the crankcase and put the lid on top. In doing so, they failed to add adequate reinforcing in the casting and not only did the top cover to the crankcase vibrate loose repeatedly, the crankcase developed a 2" crack from the cover and going down the block vertically.
All with 380 hours.
The BS twin is smooth as silk like my 22 BS twin.
I have a 15, 16, and 17.5 Kohler Commander and all are twice or more as old as the Courage, all singles and have had zero problems with them.
