Overseas the kids beg for a dollar in half the places you go, and the adult "Hay Joes" are all wanting to "give you a gift".....and then get one in return from you.....You sort of develop an immunity to it after awhile. Here in the States I"ve had my share of approaches, but only two that were really memorable.

Once was a "lady" who walked up to the door or my car at a convenience store outside the gate at Charleston and asked me if I wanted "a date". Granted she wasn"t panhandling as she was "selling something" but, to me, it seems that it would take the same set of cajones that panhandling does. My response was, "Sorry babe, you can"t afford me...". I don"t think she knew how to respond, given the look on her face, so she just turned and walked away.

The other was an older black gentleman who walked up to me at the car wash. You could tell he was probably homeless, or something by his cloths, but I usually try not to judge people just by what they are wearing. Anyways, we stood there talking about my "55 Chevy for about 30 minutes as I was detailing it. You could tell by the way he was reminiscing about the cars he had in his younger days that he was a real car guy, regardless of his current situation. Eventually he said that the reason he actually came over to talk to me was partly because of my car, but also to ask if I had a few dollars so he could go get himself a bottle of wine. I had really enjoyed the conversation, and regardless of the situation had to give the man credit for being honest so right or wrong I actually gave him a few dollars. That is the first and only time I"ve ever given money to someone who approached and asked for a handout.

Today's Featured Article - Show Coverage: Godfrey, Illinois Country Days - by Cindy Ladage. Except for last fourth of July's Old Gold show in Springfield, Illinois, I don't remember when it was so hot. Nevertheless, the heat didn't keep vendors and visitors alike from enjoying the third annual Country Day's Event. Jane Elliott said the event was originally a one man show. "Barry Seiler, owner of Country Town Farm Supply store used to invite people up to the Johne Deere store. He would give hats and a free meal for everyone that brings a tractor." Elliott said while this ... [Read Article]
