I remember going hunting with Dad one year and finding the perfect Christmas tree. A few shots at the base with Dad's 12ga and it was going home with us.
In high school my auto shop teacher was a Korean War vet. He used to tell stories about taking the .50 Browning and picking out trees on the other side of the valley from then to cut down. He said they used tracers to guide them in to the tree, and then easily took it down.
