I have an American vertical splitter and love it. Bought it 10 years ago used for $500. Has a big Prince PTO pump and easy to swap from tractor to tractor. Never skipped a beat. Much more convenient then a self-powered unit. I can drive to where the big trees are and split on-site. Works nice for stuff so big you can't move until split. Fuel use is not an issue if used on a smaller tractor. If you stick it on a 100 horse diesel and let the engine run near idle - yeah, it will be a fuel hog.
