These guys about have it explained. I remember seeing such stuff in the corn all my life. Not so common now with the hybrid corn that is produced . Basically it is just a genetic throwback to the original genes of the corn plant. Keep in mind, that corn is a totally domesticated plant, that has been modified by man for thousands of years. It is totally helpless with out our help. it has no seed dispersal. the ear will just hang there, then drop. Have you ever seen an ear that is trying to sprout after laying on the ground for a while? doesn't do well. Interesting topic here...even in the tractor section!!!
