I first got wind of IRS phone scams this past tax season. Client was approached on the phone with a request for a lot of personal information. Called me and I told him to hang up any time they called. Then I contacted IRS and reported it. Of course there is nothing they can do. But, like others have mentioned, you should be aware that the IRS does not make cold calls on collections. Revenue agents DO IN FACT call people on the phone regarding collection matters. However, by the time you have been assigned to a revenue agent you will have been thru a rigid postal collection procedure and will be expecting the call.
