On average and over time, livestock make the best returns to the labor and capitol of the small farmer. livestock can reproduce themselves and nearly maintain the fertility of the soil where grazing plus use a lot of crop residue and fallowed land that would go to waste. Strictly crop and or hay production are input intensive enterprises with one or a couple pay checks per year whereas most livestock enterprises can be set up to generate income several times per year which also helps to hedge the markets a little. With corn below $3.00 this would be a good year to sell your corn through just about any class of livestock and let the beans finace that end of it.
