Yes, it can make noise. It can also cause damage, like a broken piston. Might try rocking the pistons in the bore, there will be some rock but all should be close to the same. Also be sure they are flat across the block deck, not tilted or one not coming up as high as the others.
If all looks well, try cleaning the carbon out and see how it sounds, could be ok...
But then why is it making so much carbon?
Excess oil consumption? May be time for a rebuild anyway. Running too rich? Carb problem or clogged air filter. Open/missing thermostat?
